Young scientists are the future!
That is why we are committed to training motivated young scientists to become outstanding researchers.
The CPC-M and the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) offer numerous opportunities for this:
- Environmental Health and Lung Research School (Helmholtz Munich)
- DZL Academy
- DZL Data Lung Science School
- Scientific Training Program for MD Fellows (CPC-M)
Our offers in detail:
Environmental Health and Lung Research School
Here, doctoral researchers find a training and education platform with perfect supervision and excellent equipment. The aim is to develop them into leading scientists and researchers who will expand our understanding of lung diseases and their treatment. The young researchers benefit from the program's partners: Helmholtz Munich, LMU and LMU clinics.
Not only do they learn the basics of lung biology and physiology as well as basic biomedical methods and technologies, they also perfect the presentation of their research projects and the preparation of professional proposals, abstracts, presentations or publications.

DZL Academy
PhD students, postdocs and clinicians (up to 8 years after completion of PhD or MD) from research groups of DZL group leaders are invited to register as DZL Academy Fellows.
Academy Fellows have access to training and career development opportunities offered by the DZL. In addition, all Fellows are invited to help shape the various programs:
- Networking and the opportunity to collaborate with over 500 Fellows
- Invitation to events (e.g. Academy Reception and Academy Symposia)
- Mentoring by members of the academic faculty
- Numerous further training opportunities (e.g. workshops, online training)
- Strengthening and further development of specialist skills

DZL Data Lung Science School
The DataLung School is a DZL initiative that aims to train young scientists in the application of data science for lung research. It is aimed at PhD students, postdocs and clinical researchers from DZL partner institutions.
The program offers structured training in areas such as programming, statistics, machine learning and bioinformatics analysis. Participants can choose between two tracks: the BIOTRACK for researchers with a biological/clinical background and the COMPUTRACK for those with a mathematical/scientific background. Both tracks include courses, seminars and an annual symposium.

Scientific Training Program for MD Fellows
The Comprehensive Pneumology Center (CPC-M) at the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) offers qualified and motivated medical students fellowships (9 to 12 months) to work on a scientific project under the supervision of one of the CPC-M lung experts from medicine and life sciences.
The program is a unique educational and training platform for future clinical-scientific leaders in experimental, translational and clinical pulmonology. Candidates benefit from a comprehensive curriculum with high international standards and close supervision while conducting innovative research projects in translational medicine. The concept allows for in-depth interdisciplinary training in both basic and clinical research in combination with teaching content on practical and theoretical laboratory activities. Our program promotes the exchange of knowledge between researchers in the field of life sciences and clinical practitioners and gives them the opportunity to work together and, above all, to learn from each other - including when applying for funding, lectures, etc. In this way, we want to ensure optimal individual profile development and career development.
