ESID Grant for Verena Häfner

DZL Academy Fellow investigates lung infections in immunodeficencies

DZL Academy Fellow Verena Häfner, PhD student at the DZL site Munich (CPC-M, Stöger Lab), successfully applied for a postdoc fellowship to investigate the Hyper IgE Syndrome (STAT3-HIES). The funding amount of around 100,000 euros includes a two-year fellowship for Verena Häfner, as well as funding for materials and travel expenses.

STAT3-HIES is an inborn error of immunity. STAT3-HIES patients’ quality of life is especially affected by chronic lung disease. With her project "Understanding lung disease in STAT3-hyper IgE syndrome", Verena Häfner wants to investigate the lung pathophysiology in this disease. And, if possible, answer the subsequent question: What is the best treatment for chronic lung disease in STAT3-HIES?

The European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID) is a scientific society of physicians and scientists who are involved in research and take care of patients with immunodeficiencies. ESID’s main goal is to improve the awareness, diagnosis, treatment and understanding of underlying pathomechanisms. In 2021, ESID provide funding for two fellowships for PhD students or postdoctoral fellows specifically dedicated to research on primary immunodeficiencies (PID).
